Google Plus or Plus Google as some of us may call it, how well known is it? How big could it possible get? Google is more than just a search engine from email services to Google Docs and even Picasa just to name a few of millions of services Google has to offer. Google has more advertising power than television the radio and newspapers put together, just how far does Google plan on going? Let's take a look as we dig a little bit deeper into this search engine monopoly.
June 2011- it's official Google launched the Google Plus one and makes it available for webmasters, but what exactly is+1? Plus one is similar to another service Google offered known as Google Buzz, the plus one button is ready to compete one on one with Facebook. With Plus One users can create their own profile pages to share information, right now this is currently in beta so only a few select users have access to it, other users can still +1 using their existing Google account.
What exactly is the idea behind this little popular button that seems to be showing up everywhere? The idea behind plus one is to share information similar to that of Twitter and Facebook, but with Google being in charge of search engine ranking how will the +1 button impact your site or more for the matter your search results? Let's start by taking a look at a typical example: Let's say you have friends associated with your plus one profile, not only will this be shared publicly that you "plused" a page but when your friends search for something similar of those keywords the result will be placed above other search results.
Does Google plan on taking this to the next level, what if enough people + a page? Right now it's still fairly new and if you're a webmaster who is not utilizing it I would highly recommend it. The plus one button sends information to Google and tells Google that this website has some sort of importance acting in a way as a backlink. The big G has changed its search engine algorithms hundreds of times simply due to the fact that many webmasters have found a way to manipulate rankings, we all know that it takes more then just backlinks- much more to be exact. Google can track how information is shared, social bookmarking sites, profiles, how many people bookmark a page and discuss it against forums the algorithms used are much more complex than simple science.
Right now it's hard to say if Google + will become a large part of search engine rankings, as a webmaster and marketer I can assure you that adding the button won't hurt. I have always kind of imagined searched engine rankings being based off of how many people liked a page, when you have thousands of visitors tweet or like a page it's safe to say that the content is going to be useful to readers and it should also mean that the website deserves to have the number one ranking for it's search term, can't we all agree on that?
To Review I would have to say Google Plus is going to go a long ways, it's already appearing on thousands of websites across the internet, the more publicity and attention this little button gets the better chance more people will start utilizing it. Watch out Twitter and Facebook because Google has a new button in town, and I can assure you it's not going down without a fight.
